University of Southern California was prepared to have its valedictorian speak at this year's commencement.
But the university canceled valedictorian Asna Tabassum's speech, citing safety concerns. A week after canceling her speech, the school canceled their graduation ceremony altogether.
This comes in the wake of campus pro-Palestine protests getting violent with police on the USC campus.
Before Tabassum was barred from speaking, she repeatedly called for “complete abolishment” of Israel in addition to sharing antisemitic posts on social media.
USC student group Trojans for Israel said Tabassum is “a student who openly traffics antisemitic and anti-Zionist rhetoric.”
“This troubling selection turns an inclusive and meaningful milestone into an unwelcoming and intolerant environment for Jewish graduates and their families,” Trojans for Israel said.
The University of Southern California had 236 eligible candidates for valedictorian, but chose someone who has propagated antisemitic rhetoric to represent the Class of 2024.
USC students promote genocide and face no consequences. USC faculty members endorse hate and face no consequences. It's time for USC President Carol Folt to face some consequences.
